November 2023 Witnesses a Sharp Decline in U.S. Imports of Ferro-alloys, Reaching a Mere $171M

U.S. Ferro-Alloys Imports

In November 2023, purchases abroad of ferro-alloys decreased by -35.6% to 83K tons for the first time since August 2023, thus ending a two-month rising trend. Overall, imports, however, saw slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 with an increase of 203% against the previous month. As a result, imports reached the peak of 208K tons. From January 2023 to November 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ferro-alloys imports fell dramatically to $171M (IndexBox estimates) in November 2023. Over the period under review, imports recorded a perceptible shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in December 2022 with an increase of 93% month-to-month. As a result, imports attained the peak of $447M. Imports by Country

Russia (19K tons), Malaysia (14K tons) and India (9.9K tons) were the main suppliers of ferro-alloys imports to the United States, together comprising 51% of total imports. These countries were followed by South Africa and Brazil, which together accounted for a further 15%.

From November 2022 to November 2023, the biggest increases were in South Africa (with a CAGR of +29.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest ferro-alloys suppliers to the United States were Russia ($29M), Brazil ($17M) and Malaysia ($14M), with a combined 35% share of total imports. India and South Africa lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.

Among the main suppliers, South Africa, with a CAGR of +17.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports by Type

Ferro-silicon (28K tons), ferro-manganese (23K tons) and ferro-chromium (16K tons) were the main products of ferro-alloys imports to the United States, with a combined 80% share of total imports.

From November 2022 to November 2023, the biggest increases were in ferro-silicon (with a CAGR of +7.5%), while purchases for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the most traded types of ferro-alloys in the United States were ferro-silicon ($48M), miscellaneous ferro-alloys ($35M) and ferro-chromium ($34M), with a combined 68% share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

In November 2023, the ferro-alloys price stood at $2,051 per ton (CIF, US), surging by 12% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in February 2023 an increase of 64% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $3,359 per ton in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to November 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Canada ($6,338 per ton), while the price for Mexico ($1,014 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From November 2022 to November 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Finland (+8.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
