U.S. Announces $500M Funding for Domestic Critical Minerals and Battery Supply Chain

The U.S. Department of Energy has announced a funding initiative to support domestic production of materials essential for batteries and energy technologies. According to Mining.com, the department plans to allocate up to $500 million for this purpose.

The funding opportunity was issued by the department's Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation. It aims to finance demonstration and commercial-scale operations that process or recycle critical materials. Targeted materials include lithium, graphite, nickel, copper, and aluminum, among others found in commercial battery systems.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated that the United States has historically depended on unfriendly foreign nations for these materials. The department believes reinforcing domestic supply chains will assist in meeting rising energy and electricity demands and support energy security objectives.

The announcement coincides with a U.S. official's participation in an energy security forum in Japan, where discussions with regional allies on supply chain cooperation are taking place. Assistant Secretary Audrey Robertson emphasized that partnerships remain important even as domestic production expands. She described processing as a key part of the national supply base and said increasing domestic output, including through recycling, would enhance national security and prepare the nation and its allies for future energy needs.

This funding round is the third such initiative under existing department programs focused on battery materials and manufacturing. Project selection will focus on three categories: processing minerals from raw feedstocks, recycling critical materials, and manufacturing battery materials and components.

The effort is part of a wider strategy to reestablish domestic critical mineral supply chains, which are presently concentrated in overseas processing centers, notably in China. By fostering new processing and recycling capabilities, the department intends to fortify the early and middle stages of the battery supply chain. This is seen as a way to secure necessary raw materials for electric vehicles, grid storage, and related energy technologies.
