U.S. and China Set for Key Trade Talks in Paris Ahead of Potential Presidential Visit

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will meet with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng on Sunday and Monday in Paris for a new round of trade talks, the Treasury Department said Thursday. The talks are seen as preparatory work for a potential state visit by President Donald Trump to Beijing starting March 31.

The White House has said Trump is traveling to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping. The visit is widely believed to aim to keep relations stable between the world's two largest economies. This would be the first visit to China by a U.S. president since Trump went in his first term in 2017. It would come five months after the two leaders met in Busan and agreed to a one-year truce in a trade war that had seen significant tariffs.

In a statement, Bessent said the trade and economic dialogue is moving forward. He stated that his team would continue to deliver results that put America's farmers, workers, and businesses first. The business community and analysts are expected to closely follow the talks for clues of possible agreements when Trump meets Xi, including on Chinese purchases of U.S. products and managing the trade imbalance.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently said it would be a big year for China-U.S. relations. While not confirming the state visit, he said the agenda of high-level exchange is already on the table and emphasized the need for thorough preparations. Bessent and He have led trade negotiations between the two countries since last year, having met in several international cities.
