US and China Launch Economic Talks in Paris Ahead of Presidential Summit

According to the Associated Press, representatives from the United States and China have commenced economic and trade discussions in Paris. The meetings are led by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng.

The discussions are anticipated to precede a state visit by the current President of the United States to Beijing for a meeting with China's leader. The White House has indicated the visit is scheduled for late March and early April, though Chinese authorities have not provided an official confirmation. This would be the first such visit by a U.S. president since 2017.

The upcoming meeting follows a gathering between the two leaders in Busan five months ago, which resulted in a one-year truce in a trade conflict. That conflict had previously involved significant reciprocal tariffs before both sides de-escalated. The lead negotiators have been conducting talks since last year, having previously met in several European and Asian cities.

In a statement last week, a Chinese foreign ministry official described the coming period as significant for bilateral relations, noting that a schedule for high-level exchanges is being prepared. The Chinese commerce ministry stated the talks would address mutual trade and economic concerns. Separately, the U.S. Treasury Secretary emphasized his team's focus on outcomes that prioritize American agricultural, labor, and commercial interests.
