U.S. Ammonia Import Prices in 2020 - Q1 2022
In Mar 2022, the average ammonia import price amounted to $1,034 per ton, growing by 4.7% against the previous month. Overall, the import price saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in Apr 2021 when the average import price increased by 29% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in Mar 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In Mar 2022, the country with the highest price was Trinidad and Tobago ($1,118 per ton), while the price for Canada totaled $933 per ton.
From Jan 2020 to Mar 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Trinidad and Tobago (+119.2%).
Imports into the U.S.
Ammonia imports into the United States skyrocketed to 239K tons in Mar 2022, rising by 53% against Mar 2021 figures. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a tangible increase from Jan 2020 to Mar 2022: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +4.2% over the last twenty six - month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on Mar 2022 figures, imports decreased by -4.9% against Jan 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in Jan 2022 with an increase of 77% m-o-m. Imports peaked at 266K tons in Jun 2020; however, from Jul 2020 to Mar 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, ammonia imports skyrocketed to $247M (IndexBox estimates) in Mar 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in Jan 2022 when imports increased by 100% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in Mar 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Trinidad and Tobago (133K tons) and Canada (105K tons) were the main suppliers of ammonia imports to the United States.
From Jan 2020 to Mar 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Canada (with a CAGR of +4.4%).
In value terms, Trinidad and Tobago ($149M) and Canada ($98M) were the largest ammonia suppliers to the United States.
In terms of the main suppliers, Trinidad and Tobago, with a CAGR of +128.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review.
