U.S. Airlines Confident on Fares and Demand Despite Fuel Price Surge

Major U.S. airline executives are expressing a more confident outlook regarding fares and passenger demand compared to many international carriers, despite a sharp increase in jet fuel costs and broader industry disruption. According to a Reuters report, this confidence was highlighted at a recent industry conference.

For the largest U.S. airlines, which do not hedge against oil price increases, the primary impact of the conflict that began in late February has been a near-doubling of jet fuel expenses. The chief executive of United Airlines stated the revenue environment remains robust, with a goal to fully offset higher fuel costs this year. He noted that fares booked in a recent week had risen significantly and that the carrier could currently recover the entire fuel price increase. United has adjusted its schedule by reducing less profitable flights.

Delta Air Lines indicated it possesses the flexibility to reduce capacity if fuel prices remain high. Both American Airlines and Delta raised their quarterly revenue projections, even as each cited a substantial financial impact from fuel in the first quarter. Southwest Airlines projected meaningful margin expansion for the year.

Analysts note that the apparent strength of U.S. demand is partially amplified by an unusually weak period for comparison. Travel demand last year abruptly froze and bookings plunged when President Donald Trump unveiled sweeping tariffs, prompting most airlines to withdraw their guidance. Furthermore, the U.S. market was already constrained before the fuel price surge, as low-cost carriers had been cutting routes, grounding aircraft, and slowing growth following a period of weak profitability.

Industry data shows U.S. airlines plan a modest overall capacity increase for the second quarter of 2026, which includes a significant reduction in seats by ultra-low-cost carriers. This dynamic is removing some of the least expensive seats from the market, allowing larger airlines more pricing power without instigating a widespread competitive fare war.

Different Pressures

The tone among many European and Asian carriers has been more guarded. Lufthansa of Germany described its 2026 outlook as unclear due to geopolitical uncertainty. Wizz Air of Hungary warned the conflict would negatively affect its net profit for fiscal 2026. Air New Zealand suspended its full-year earnings forecast and announced a reduction in flights through early May.
