Price of UK Curtains Rises by 23%, Reaching $3.2 for Every Square Meter

United Kingdom Curtains Import Price in March 2023

In March 2023, the curtains price amounted to $3.2 per square meter (CIF, United Kingdom), rising by 23% against the previous month. Over the period from March 2022 to March 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.6%. The import price peaked at $3.2 per square meter in December 2022; afterwards, it flattened through to March 2023.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In March 2023, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($9.2 per square meter), while the price for China ($2.0 per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+9.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

United Kingdom Curtains Import Prices by Type

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplied products. In March 2023, the product with the highest price was curtains (including drapes) and interior blinds; curtain or bed valances, knitted or crocheted, of textile materials other than cotton or synthetic fibres ($6.5 per square meter), while the price for curtains (including drapes) and interior blinds, curtain or bed valances; of cotton, not knitted or crocheted ($2.4 per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by curtains (including drapes) and interior blinds; curtain or bed valances, knitted or crocheted, of synthetic fibres (+6.5%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

United Kingdom Curtains Imports

In March 2023, supplies from abroad of curtains and interior blinds decreased by -27.2% to 5.6M square meters for the first time since December 2022, thus ending a two-month rising trend. Over the period under review, imports saw a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in September 2022 when imports increased by 48% month-to-month. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 9.4M square meters in March 2022; however, from April 2022 to March 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in September 2022 when imports increased by 35% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 25M square meters in March 2022; however, from April 2022 to March 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.

Moreover, curtains (including drapes) and interior blinds, curtain or bed valances; of synthetic fibres, not knitted or crocheted exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, curtains (including drapes) and interior blinds, curtain or bed valances; of cotton, not knitted or crocheted (521K square meters), eightfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by curtains (including drapes) and interior blinds, curtain or bed valances; of textile materials other than cotton or synthetic fibres, not knitted or crocheted (458K square meters), with an 8.2% share.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of curtains (including drapes) and interior blinds, curtain or bed valances; of synthetic fibres, not knitted or crocheted stood at -4.0%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: curtains (including drapes) and interior blinds, curtain or bed valances; of cotton, not knitted or crocheted (-4.3% per month) and curtains (including drapes) and interior blinds, curtain or bed valances; of textile materials other than cotton or synthetic fibres, not knitted or crocheted (-4.8% per month).

In value terms, curtains (including drapes) and interior blinds, curtain or bed valances; of synthetic fibres, not knitted or crocheted ($13M) constituted the largest type of curtains supplied to the UK, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by curtains (including drapes) and interior blinds; curtain or bed valances, knitted or crocheted, of synthetic fibres ($1.7M), with a 9.5% share of total imports. It was followed by curtains (including drapes) and interior blinds, curtain or bed valances; of textile materials other than cotton or synthetic fibres, not knitted or crocheted, with a 9.3% share.

United Kingdom Curtains Imports by Country

In March 2023, China (3.6M square meters) constituted the largest curtains supplier to the UK, with a 64% share of total imports. Moreover, curtains imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Pakistan (686K square meters), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Vietnam (509K square meters), with a 9.1% share.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from China stood at -5.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Pakistan (-2.9% per month) and Vietnam (-0.4% per month).

In value terms, China ($7.1M) constituted the largest supplier of curtains to the UK, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($2.8M), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Pakistan, with a 9% share.
