Unemployment Claims Edge Down as Labor Market Shows Mixed Signals

New applications for unemployment benefits in the United States decreased slightly last week. The Labor Department reported that filings for the week ending March 7 fell by 1,000 to 213,000. This result was slightly below the forecast from analysts surveyed by FactSet, who expected 215,000 new benefit applications.

Weekly jobless claims are considered a near real-time indicator of layoff activity. These numbers have generally stayed within a low historical range, mostly between 200,000 and 250,000, for the past few years. However, several prominent companies have recently announced workforce reductions.

Other recent data points to a cooling labor market. Last week, the Labor Department reported that U.S. employers unexpectedly cut 92,000 jobs in February, a sign that the labor market remains under strain. Economists had expected 60,000 new jobs in February. Revisions also slashed 69,000 jobs from December and January payrolls, nudging the unemployment rate up to 4.4%. The Labor Department also recently reported that job openings fell in December to the lowest level in more than five years.

Economists describe the current job market as being in a state of low hiring and low firing, which has maintained a historically low unemployment rate but made finding new employment difficult for some. Hiring has slowed over the past year, a trend attributed to economic uncertainty and the ongoing effects of earlier high interest rates.

Additional uncertainty stems from geopolitical conflict, which has driven a sharp increase in oil prices. This occurs against a backdrop of persistent inflation. A recent report showed consumer prices in February were 2.4% higher than a year earlier. That inflation rate was the same as the prior month's and better than the 2.5% that economists expected, but it remains above the 2% target the Federal Reserve has set for the economy. It also does not include the spike in gasoline prices that has happened this month.

The central bank's preferred inflation metric is scheduled for release, shortly before its next policy meeting to consider interest rates.
