UK Inflation Dips to 3.6% as Food Prices Show Unexpected Rise

According to analysis from ING, UK headline inflation has decreased from 3.8% to 3.6%. This dip was shallower than expected due to a sharper pick-up in food inflation than anticipated, with October's rebound to 4.9% confirming that last month's fall to 4.5% was an anomaly.

Evidence from the eurozone, where fresh food inflation is falling, coupled with a levelling off in producer price data for food products, suggests supermarket inflation is probably near its peak. The risk to the Bank of England's year-end food forecast of 5.3% is seen as being to the downside.

The recent food price rebound is likely to keep concern alive among the Bank's hawks about the potential impact on inflation expectations, with worries it could fuel more persistent price pressure similar to that seen two or three years ago.

Services inflation decreased from 4.7% to 4.5%, principally due to air fares. However, the Bank of England's preferred "core services" metric actually notched a tad higher in October when volatile and indexed elements are stripped out. Hawks may point to sharply increasing restaurant and cafe prices, potentially linked to broader food price pressure, as a bellwether for persistence.

Despite this, services inflation is still generally heading in the right direction when ignoring month-to-month volatility, and private sector wage growth is easing rapidly. This is unlikely to shake the conviction of the Bank's doves, who argue immediate easing is necessary to offset potential weakness from the jobs market.

The data is unlikely to change the minds of many voters on the BoE committee, meaning the decision continues to hinge on Governor Andrew Bailey. As he is more sympathetic to the doves' view, he is expected to tip the balance in favor of a cut in December.

The forthcoming Autumn Budget is also doubted to change this outlook. While gilt yields have risen following reports that the government has scrapped plans to increase income tax due to a smaller fiscal hole, material tax hikes are still probable in 2026. This marginally helps build the case for a further loosening in monetary policy.
