UK Battery Storage Secures Capacity Market Obligations for 2026/27 & 2029/30

Battery storage projects in the United Kingdom have secured a combined volume of obligations in recent capacity market auctions, according to a report from Energy-Storage.News. The country's National Energy System Operator recently concluded its separate one-year-ahead and four-year-ahead auctions, which are designed to pay operators for being available during periods of potential system stress.

In the T-1 auction for the 2026/2027 delivery year, battery energy storage systems were awarded obligations representing a portion of the total capacity. Gas and nuclear generation filled the majority of the capacity obligations for this near-term auction. The clearing price for the T-1 auction showed a significant decline compared to the previous year's result.

The T-4 auction, which concluded in early March and is for delivery in 2029/2030, procured a total volume of obligations that exceeded its target. Within this auction, battery storage projects won a specific volume of obligations, representing a smaller percentage of the total compared to the T-1 auction. Pumped hydro storage also secured a volume of obligations in the T-4 auction. The clearing price for the T-4 auction was also substantially lower than the price from the prior year.

The capacity market applies a de-rating factor to each technology based on reliability, which influences how much nameplate capacity can be bid. This factor is typically highest for gas and nuclear, lower for storage technologies, and lowest for solar and wind. The technology mix in the recent T-1 auction was reported as similar to the previous year, though battery storage won a slightly lower volume this time.

A number of owner-operators were listed as having battery storage projects that won obligations in the auctions. The capacity market is generally considered to cover only a minor part of a battery project's overall revenue.
