UAE Intensifies Market Inspections to Control Prices of Essential Goods

According to a report from Gulf Business, authorities across the UAE have increased inspections at retail outlets nationwide. The Ministry of Economy and Tourism stated this action responds to rising demand for key consumer products, with officials monitoring markets to prevent unjustified price hikes and ensure regulatory compliance.

Specialized inspection teams are performing daily monitoring visits at points of sale throughout the country. This initiative involves coordination with economic development departments in all emirates as part of a unified national monitoring team. The goal is to prevent unfair commercial practices and maintain oversight during periods of high demand.

The ministry highlighted that specific price controls apply to nine essential food categories: cooking oil, eggs, dairy products, rice, sugar, poultry, legumes, bread, and wheat. Under the current policy, retailers cannot raise prices for these items without prior approval from the ministry and a designated national committee. This framework aims to shield consumers from unjustified increases and maintain retail sector stability.

Officials acknowledged recent price increases for some food items, specifically onions and tomatoes, over the past two days. The ministry characterized these fluctuations as temporary and linked to regional developments affecting supply. It stated that additional quantities of the affected commodities have been supplied to the market to ensure stable availability.

Authorities reassured residents that the country maintains a robust strategic reserve of essential goods capable of covering market demand for up to six months. This reserve is distributed across various regions through a structured system designed to maintain supply chain efficiency. Officials confirmed that shipping and supply movements continue normally through the country's various entry points, with supply chains remaining fully operational.

Since the beginning of the regional crisis, market surveillance activities have significantly increased. The Ministry of Economy and Tourism, alongside local departments, has conducted approximately 7,105 inspection tours nationwide. These inspections detected 567 violations, mostly involving unjustified price increases. Enforcement measures included 449 warnings to traders and financial penalties totalling 207,250 dirhams.

Monitoring campaigns are expected to intensify further in the coming period. The ministry emphasized that consumers play a role by reporting violations through official channels. Officials also urged residents to follow responsible consumer habits, avoid panic buying, and refrain from hoarding, as such practices can disrupt market stability.

Authorities reiterated there is no cause for concern regarding the availability of essential goods, stating that supply levels remain strong and prices are expected to stabilize as additional shipments reach the market.
