Turkiye's Recycling Industry Expands, Faces Pollution Challenges in 2026

According to Scrap Monster, Turkiye's recycling sector has expanded significantly in recent years. This growth is largely attributed to increased imports of foreign plastic waste, which rose after a 2018 import ban by China.

Data indicates the country received over 677,000 metric tons of plastic scrap in 2024. Approximately 77 percent of these imports originated from the European Union and the United Kingdom.

Much of the imported material is processed in roughly 180 recycling facilities located in Adana Province. Reports state that some waste is dumped along riverbanks or leaks from facilities into wastewater systems, eventually reaching the Mediterranean Sea.

Environmental groups note that weak waste management practices compound the issue. One group states that Turkiye mismanages more than half of its plastic waste, allowing significant amounts to enter waterways. A separate report ranks the country among the largest contributors to plastic leakage in the Mediterranean region.

Plastic pollution is noted to disrupt green turtle nesting behavior, with turtles avoiding contaminated beaches. Larger plastics can cause injury or suffocation through entanglement or ingestion, while smaller fragments are consumed by various marine species.
