TSA Union Warns of Rising Airport Security Risks Amid Staffing Crisis

A Transportation Security Administration union official has stated that risks to airport security are poised to increase. The official, George Borek, made these remarks during an appearance on a Fox Business program.

Borek indicated that the agency has been operating under a hiring freeze since the previous year. He noted that during a recent period when the government was not shut down, personnel departed or retired from the TSA. According to the acting director, over 400 agents have already indicated plans to leave, a figure Borek expects to grow substantially.

The union leader warned that the situation will deteriorate further as the agency faces difficulties in replacing departing staff, compounded by the time required to certify new agents for checkpoint duty. These challenges are expected to intensify with the approach of the year's peak travel season and an anticipated increase in international travelers for a major sporting event this summer.

Borek also raised questions about whether the agency will have the necessary resources to perform its duties effectively once the current funding situation is resolved.
