Trader Loses $50 Million in AAVE Token Swap Due to Price Impact

A cryptocurrency trader experienced a significant loss on Thursday following a substantial swap executed through a decentralized finance protocol's trading interface. According to a statement posted on X by Aave founder Stani Kulechov, the user attempted to buy AAVE with $50 million worth of the stablecoin USDT through the Aave interface.

The interface flagged the order due to its size relative to available liquidity, warning of extraordinary slippage and requiring manual confirmation of the risk. The trader confirmed and proceeded with the transaction on a mobile device.

The swap resulted in the receipt of only 324 AAVE tokens. Based on prevailing market prices, these tokens held a value of approximately $36,100, representing a substantial reduction from the initial $50 million order value.

An engineer from the project clarified that the primary issue was not slippage but the price impact of the order. The trade quote presented to the user before execution already indicated that the $50 million would yield fewer than 140 AAVE tokens before accounting for fees, implying a near-total price impact. The founder of Aave stated the trade was routed through an integrated decentralized trade-routing system which functioned as intended, noting the transaction required explicit user acceptance of the risk.

The project founder added that the team plans to contact the trader to return roughly $600,000 in fees generated by the transaction. The incident highlights how large trades on decentralized exchanges can lead to severe price impacts when liquidity is low, and how such platforms may require additional safeguards to prevent extreme user errors while maintaining open access.
