Thailand Returns 284-Tonne Illegal E-Waste Shipment to US

Thai customs officials have seized a large quantity of electronic waste at Laem Chabang Port. According to Scrap Monster, the shipment weighed 284 tonnes and was discovered inside 12 containers that were falsely declared as containing scrap metal from another nation.

The Department of Pollution Control stated that the confiscated material will be sent back to the United States, its country of origin. Authorities are inspecting additional containers from the same shipment and anticipate finding more prohibited electronic waste, which will also be repatriated.

The interception occurred after an alert from an organization that monitors the illicit movement of hazardous materials governed by the Basel Convention. Thailand is a party to this international agreement, which establishes rules for controlling hazardous waste shipments and requires that illegal consignments be returned to their point of origin. The convention aims to prevent the dumping of such waste in developing nations.

Thailand has implemented a ban on electronic waste imports, which was later expanded to cover hundreds of specific categories of such material. The regulations mandate that returned waste must be managed in an environmentally sound manner.
