Study: Standard Solar Parks Support Livestock Grazing, Boosting Dual Land Use

New research indicates that standard ground-mounted solar installations can support agricultural activities such as sheep and cattle grazing, according to a report from pv magazine. The analysis, conducted by the Federal Association for New Energy Industry, examined five solar parks located across several German states over a year and a half.

Scientists from two universities assessed vegetation, biomass, and animal behavior at the sites. They compared conditions under, between, and outside the rows of photovoltaic modules, including areas with varying soil and moisture levels. The influence of the solar structures on microclimate factors like soil temperature and light was also evaluated.

Using scanning technology and drones, the research team created three-dimensional maps of the vegetation structure throughout the parks. The study reported that plant species diversity and protein content were often higher in areas beneath the modules, while greater biomass was typically found between the panel rows.

Observations of grazing sheep noted that the animals frequently sought shelter under the modules during periods of higher temperatures. The association concluded that the vegetation within these solar installations provides adequate feed quality, suggesting dual use for energy generation and agriculture is feasible without specialized agrivoltaic systems. The group has recommended that this form of land management receive official recognition as an agricultural practice.
