Study Finds Nanoplastic Pollution Throughout North Atlantic Ocean

Research indicates nanoplastic pollution is present at every sampled location and depth in the North Atlantic Ocean. According to Scrap Monster, a recent study collected water samples from twelve locations, ranging from the subtropical gyre to the southern North Sea.

Samples were taken near the ocean surface, at intermediate depths of approximately one kilometer, and close to the seabed. The analysis detected nanoplastics, defined as particles measuring less than one micron, at all these points.

Concentrations were highest near the surface, averaging 18.1 milligrams per cubic meter. At mid-depths, the average concentration declined to 10.9 milligrams per cubic meter, while near the seafloor it measured 5.5 milligrams per cubic meter.

The study, published in the journal Nature, estimates the mass of nanoplastics in the surface mixed layer of the North Atlantic to be between 11.73 and 15.20 megatonnes. This estimated mass could be significantly higher than previous assessments for larger plastic debris in the same region.

The findings highlight the widespread contamination of the marine environment by these minute plastic particles.
