Strategy's $54 Billion Bitcoin Holdings: A 5+ Year Corporate Treasury Evolution

A company known as Strategy, which transitioned from software to holding Bitcoin on its balance sheet, has been acquiring the cryptocurrency for over half a decade. According to a report from Yahoo Finance, this activity helped initiate a wider movement among public companies to incorporate digital assets into their corporate treasuries.

The firm's stated objective evolved from seeking shareholder value into a significant shift within the industry, a change accelerated by closer links between conventional finance and crypto markets. Strategy's total holdings have reached 761,068 BTC, representing approximately 3.6% of the entire possible Bitcoin supply. Based on a valuation exceeding $70,000 per Bitcoin, these holdings are valued close to $54 billion.

The firm's leadership has expressed a continuous intention to acquire Bitcoin irrespective of market peaks, a policy that has increased its average purchase price to around $75,700 per Bitcoin. This average cost is over seven times higher than the price paid for its initial acquisition.

Major Acquisitions and Market Impact

The company's single largest purchase occurred in late November 2024, involving 55,500 BTC at an average price near $97,862, for a total expenditure of $5.4 billion. This transaction exceeded all prior acquisitions by more than $800 million. Following the public announcement of this purchase, the price of Bitcoin declined by roughly $4,000, falling below $94,000.

Just one week prior to that record acquisition, Strategy executed its second-largest purchase of 51,780 BTC at an average price of about $88,627, costing $4.6 billion. After a brief initial dip, the cryptocurrency's price recovered on the same day, approaching its then-record level. Bitcoin subsequently achieved a new all-time high the next day. This purchase increased the firm's total holdings to 331,200 BTC.

In December 2020, Strategy made its third-largest acquisition, buying 29,646 BTC for approximately $21,925 each. The total investment for this transaction was $650 million. Market data indicates the price of Bitcoin showed little movement in the day following this announcement.
