Spanish Steel Production Surges by 8.9% in February 2025

Spanish steelmakers have reported a notable increase in production, with February 2025 figures showing an 8.9% rise compared to the same month in 2024, reaching a total of 1.03 million tons. This surge in production has propelled Spain to the 15th position in the global steel production rankings, according to the WorldSteel Association.

Data from the IndexBox platform indicates that this growth is part of a broader trend, as the country's production volumes also saw a 0.8% month-on-month increase. For the first two months of 2025, Spain's steel industry produced 2.06 million tons, marking a 6.7% increase year-on-year. This contrasts with the overall decline in the European Union, where steel production fell by 7.1% year-on-year in February 2025, totaling 3.3 million tons, and by 5.1% year-on-year to 20.4 million tons for January-February.

In 2024, Spain's steel production rose by 3.3% from the previous year, reaching 11.82 million tons. December's output was 870 thousand tons, reflecting a 14.3% month-on-month decrease but a 16% year-on-year increase. The average monthly production in 2024 was 985.2 thousand tons, compared to 954.3 thousand tons in 2023 and 964.4 thousand tons in 2022.

Spain's steel industry is supported by 14 operational plants, including major facilities like ArcelorMittal Asturias in Gijon and Aviles, with capacities of 1.2 million and 4.2 million tons per year, respectively, and Celsa Barcelona Castellbisbal with a capacity of 2.5 million tons per year. Other significant plants include ArcelorMittal Sestao and Celsa Nervacero, contributing to the country's robust steel production capabilities.
