Remarkable Reduction: South Africa's Imitation Jewellery Dips to $4,925/Ton

South Africa Imitation Jewellery Import Price in May 2023

In May 2023, the imitation jewellery price amounted to $4,925 per ton (CIF, South Africa), reducing by -32.8% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price faced a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2023 an increase of 113% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $55,351 per ton in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to May 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was India ($19,678 per ton), while the price for China amounted to $3,742 per ton.

From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (-6.4%).

South Africa Imitation Jewellery Imports

In May 2023, supplies from abroad of imitation jewelry increased by 40% to 408 tons, rising for the third consecutive month after two months of decline. Overall, imports enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2022 when imports increased by 1,842% against the previous month.

In value terms, imitation jewellery imports declined to $2M (IndexBox estimates) in May 2023. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from May 2022 to May 2023: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +8.4% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on May 2023 figures, imports increased by +7.5% against February 2023 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in June 2022 with an increase of 272% against the previous month.

South Africa Imitation Jewellery Imports by Country

In May 2023, China (396 tons) was the main supplier of imitation jewellery to South Africa, with a 97% share of total imports. It was followed by India (3.5 tons), with a 0.9% share of total imports.

From May 2022 to May 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from China stood at +60.7%.

In value terms, China ($1.5M) constituted the largest supplier of imitation jewellery to South Africa, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($69K), with a 3.4% share of total imports.

From May 2022 to May 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from China totaled +37.8%.
