South Africa Expands Paper Recycling to Combat Landfill Overload

According to Recycling International, a network of collectors and processors returns a significant volume of paper and packaging for reuse in new products. The Paper Manufacturers Association of South Africa, marking Global Recycling Day, states that consumer participation is increasing but requires further improvement.

Pamsa notes that a large amount of material still reaches landfills or the natural environment because of inadequate separation and recycling practices. The association's representative, Samantha Choles, identifies office paper and paper packaging as materials with high recyclability that are crucial for boosting national recovery rates.

Choles encourages the public to set aside cardboard and paper bags for informal collectors, as placing them in standard bins often leads to contamination that complicates recycling. Pamsa is also urging businesses, schools, and households to aid office paper recycling by providing accessible collection containers near printers and desks.

The organization advises that simple adjustments in daily routines can help divert paper from landfills, which are currently facing capacity constraints. These efforts aim to ensure more paper products are reprocessed and kept in circulation.
