Solar Installations Declined 14% in 2025, Yet Led New Capacity Additions

A report from the Solar Energy Industries Association and Wood Mackenzie indicates that solar capacity additions in the United States decreased by 14% in 2025. The sector, however, maintained its position as the leading source of new power generation for the fifth consecutive year.

Installations totaled 43.2 gigawatts direct current last year. The utility-scale segment experienced a larger decline of 16%, with a particularly sharp quarterly contraction in the final period. The report attributes project delays and a focus on securing tax credit eligibility to changes in policy deadlines.

Under current legislation, wind and solar projects must meet a construction start deadline to qualify for certain tax incentives. Projects missing that deadline face a separate operational service date to remain eligible.

Despite the overall drop in new capacity, solar still constituted 54% of all new electricity-generating capacity added to the national grid in 2025. When combined with energy storage projects, the figure rises to 79% of new capacity for the year.

The analysis found that a majority of solar capacity installed last year was located in states carried by the current President of the United States in the previous election. Several of these states ranked in the top ten for solar additions.

Industry analysts suggest the foundations for steady growth remain, though policy uncertainties surrounding permitting and tariffs complicate the future outlook. The trade group emphasizes that policy certainty is required for the market to function effectively and meet rising energy demand, warning that a lack thereof could result in reduced solar deployment and higher costs for consumers.
