Social Security Benefits Hit Record High with Sustained COLA Increases

According to a report from Yahoo Finance, the Social Security program has experienced significant developments over the past year. In May 2025, the average monthly payment for retired workers exceeded two thousand dollars, a first in the program's nine-decade history.

This year's cost-of-living adjustment of 2.8 percent represents the fifth straight year that benefits have risen by a minimum of 2.5 percent. Such a sustained period of increases had not occurred for almost thirty years prior.

For the approximately fifty-four million retired workers receiving payments, the annual COLA announcement in the second week of October is highly anticipated. The adjustment for 2027 is projected to be one of the most substantial boosts to monthly payouts in a quarter-century, though it is expected to include a drawback.

Calculation Methodology for Benefit Adjustments

The COLA is designed to counteract inflationary pressures and preserve the purchasing power of beneficiaries. If the price of a broad set of goods and services rises, benefits are intended to increase correspondingly to prevent a loss of buying capacity.

Since 1975, the program has used the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers as its benchmark for inflation. This index tracks more than two hundred spending categories to produce a monthly figure, enabling year-over-year comparisons to identify price changes.

A specific feature of the calculation is its reliance on data from the third calendar quarter. The COLA is determined by comparing the average CPI-W from July, August, and September of the current year to the same period in the prior year. An increase results in higher benefits for the following year.
