The soap price per ton stood at $2,513 (CIF, US) in May 2022, growing by 4.5% against the previous month. Over the last four months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.3%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In May 2022, the country with the highest price was France ($6,010 per ton), while the price for Turkey ($1,106 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From Jan 2022 to May 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+3.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Soap Imports

In May 2022, supplies from abroad of soap decreased by -4.9% to 49K tons for the first time since Feb 2022, thus ending a two-month rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average monthly rate of +1.3% from Jan 2022 to May 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. The growth pace was the most rapid in Mar 2022 with an increase of 31% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 52K tons in Apr 2022; however, from May 2022 to May 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, soap imports contracted slightly to $123M (IndexBox estimates) in May 2022. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +2.7% from Jan 2022 to May 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in Mar 2022 with an increase of 28% month-to-month. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $124M in Apr 2022; however, from May 2022 to May 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

U.S. Soap Imports by Country

Mexico (12K tons), Canada (9.8K tons) and China (9.3K tons) were the main suppliers of soap imports to the United States, together accounting for 63% of total imports. Turkey, South Korea, Colombia, France, the UK and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 25%.

From Jan 2022 to May 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Colombia (with a CAGR of +27.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest soap suppliers to the United States were Canada ($27M), Mexico ($24M) and China ($17M), together comprising 55% of total imports. France, Colombia, South Korea, the UK, Germany and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.

Colombia, with a CAGR of +25.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
