Slaughter Cattle Trade Limited in Key Regions on March 19, 2026

According to a USDA AMS MyMarketNews report, negotiated cash trade for slaughter cattle was limited on Thursday. Activity occurred on moderate demand in Nebraska and the Western Cornbelt, while the Southern Plains saw inactive trade on light demand.

In Nebraska, a small number of live purchases were reported at a specific price, but the volume was insufficient to establish a reliable market benchmark. The last reliable benchmark in that region was set the prior week, with live purchases primarily at a higher price and dressed purchases at another fixed level. A similar pattern was observed in the Western Cornbelt, where limited live purchases within a narrow range occurred, also failing to provide a solid market test. Its last reliable benchmark, also from the previous week, had live purchases across a slightly wider range, mostly at the same primary price as Nebraska, with dressed purchases matching that region's level.

In the Southern Plains, the last reliable benchmarks were established the week before. The Texas Panhandle saw live purchases in a tight range on a light test, while Kansas reported purchases at a single price point.

Confirmed negotiated sales for the day totaled 4,227 head, a decrease from the 7,324 head reported a week earlier. The cumulative total for the current week reached 5,158 head, substantially lower than the 37,335 head recorded for the comparable period the prior week.

The volume of cattle delivered to packers through all purchase types on Thursday was 65,000 head, slightly below the 65,500 head from a week ago. The weekly cumulative delivered total stands at 275,000 head, compared to 277,600 head for the same period last week.

New commitments for delivery generally within the next week were reported at 55,800 head for the day, higher than the 42,600 head from the previous week. The weekly cumulative for new commitments is 244,700 head, lower than the 283,100 head from the prior week's period.

For negotiated purchases of domestic slaughter steers and heifers graded over 80% Choice, prices on a live basis averaged just above 234.00. On a dressed basis, the average price for the same quality grade was a flat 370.00.

Separately, formula purchases on a dressed net basis for steers and heifers involved 39,600 head priced on Thursday. The weighted average weight was 965 pounds, with a weighted average net price just under 375.00.
