Revolution Wind Offshore Project Now Supplying Power to New England

According to Power Technology, the Revolution Wind offshore wind project has started delivering electricity to the power grid in New England. The project is a joint venture between Skyborn Renewables, a subsidiary of Global Infrastructure Partners, and Orsted.

The 704-megawatt installation is contracted to provide energy through long-term fixed-price agreements with utilities in Rhode Island and Connecticut. It is projected to generate sufficient electricity for over 350,000 homes and businesses.

Grid operator ISO New England has highlighted the importance of such offshore wind projects for maintaining system reliability, especially during winter when energy demand increases. The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection indicated the project may lead to substantial annual wholesale energy cost savings for ratepayers across the region.

Energy production from the wind farm is anticipated to be steady year-round, with higher output expected in the winter. The project's construction and operation involved more than 2,000 workers, including over 1,000 local union laborers who contributed more than two million hours of work.

Orsted has invested a significant sum in domestic shipbuilding and vessel contracts in the United States, supporting the construction of multiple new American vessels. The launch of Revolution Wind coincides with rising electricity demand in New England, driven by economic expansion and growth in manufacturing and data center sectors.
