Retirement Savings Among Younger Americans: A Mixed Picture

According to a recent report from Yahoo Finance, only about half of U.S. households with a reference person under 35 held any money in retirement accounts in 2022. This figure is based on the latest available data from the Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances.

For those young adults who do have such accounts, the median balance was $18,800. Separate, more recent data indicates that savers under 35 had an average of nearly $26,000 in IRAs and 401(k)s, while those under 28 averaged $13,500. This age group remains the working-age cohort least likely to have dedicated retirement savings, a situation often attributed to early-career stages and lower initial incomes.

Despite the current participation rate, the survey found that involvement for this demographic has been growing consistently over the past decade. Financial experts emphasize that time is the most significant advantage for younger savers, as even modest contributions made early can benefit from decades of compounding growth. The priority for individuals in this life stage is often cited as building a consistent savings habit, with a suggested benchmark of accumulating approximately one year of core living expenses by their early-to-mid thirties.
