Record M&A Investment in Central and Eastern Europe Reached Historic High in 2025

Investment in mergers and acquisitions across Central and Eastern Europe reached a historic high in 2025, according to a new report by Forvis Mazars and Mergermarket. The total value of deals rose by 36% compared to the previous year, reaching a record sum. This increase occurred even as the total number of transactions fell by 9% to approximately 1,300, indicating a market shift toward larger individual deals.

The most significant single transaction involved the acquisition of a Czech pharmaceutical group by a US fund, representing the largest foreign investment in the region by an outside investor in several years. Analysts linked the overall decline in deal volume partly to external economic pressures, noting that economic challenges in Germany led investors to adopt a more selective strategy, which particularly affected the central and northern parts of the region.

Foreign investors continue to form the foundation of the regional M&A market. Their participation accounted for 43% of the total number of deals and 54% of the total value in 2025. Investors from the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France are the most prominent, though investment from within the region itself is growing. In contrast, foreign investors account for under one-fifth of the M&A market in North America.

The region's appeal is attributed to several factors, including comparatively robust economic growth, membership in the European Union, regulatory stability, a skilled labor force, and lower operating costs than many Western European countries. Its geographic position provides proximity to a large consumer market, supported by developed transport networks and increasing digitalization, making it an attractive production and investment gateway to Europe for global capital.
