Project STOP Expands Circular Waste Management in Indonesia, Reaching 770,000 People

According to a report from Packaging Europe, Project STOP, an initiative co-founded by Borealis and Systemiq, expanded its services to over 770,000 people in 2025. The program aims to create the first regency-wide circular waste management system in Banyuwangi Regency, East Java.

Since 2017, systems supported by the project have collected over 100,000 metric tonnes of waste. The effort, established with Clean Rivers, Banyuwangi Regency, and the Indonesian Government, has also generated 276 full-time-equivalent jobs.

In 2025, the program collaborated with local leaders and influencers through community outreach to improve household participation. Banyuwangi Regency's related sanitation efforts were recognized nationally with a healthy district award.

Recycled polypropylene from the project's collected plastic was used to create Wild Pots, which were displayed at a 2025 trade event. This resulted from a collaboration involving Borealis, Borouge, Pelita Mekar Semesta, WILDPLASTIC, and WITTMANN.

Plans for the current year include extending waste collection to more villages, commissioning a second material recovery facility in Karetan, and starting construction on two material transfer stations. These new facilities are anticipated to manage up to 260 metric tonnes of waste daily once operational.

Recently, Borouge and Borealis partnered with several organizations, including Catalytic Finance Foundation and Reciki Solusi Indonesia, to establish Indonesia's first fully integrated circular waste management ecosystem. These parties intend to work with Project STOP to support ongoing efforts against marine litter and to improve local economic development.
