Porsche AG 2025 Profit Plummets After EV Platform Cancellation

According to a report from Euronews, Porsche AG recorded two significant one-time accounting charges in 2025 that substantially reduced its operating profit. The company's operating profit fell to 90 million euros from 5.3 billion euros the prior year.

The first charge, valued at 2.7 billion euros, was a goodwill impairment. This accounting entry reflects a downward revision of long-term earnings expectations for the brand's value and future potential. The second charge, worth 2.0 billion euros, is linked to product realignment. Porsche AG has abandoned development of a new all-electric vehicle platform, shifting its focus back toward combustion engines and plug-in hybrids. These non-cash charges represent an immediate recognition of sunk costs from the canceled program.

Previously, Porsche AG was noted for its high profitability within the global automotive industry, achieving an operating margin of 14.5% in 2024. Following the charges, that margin collapsed to 0.3%. The brand, along with Audi, had been a primary profit center for its parent group, Volkswagen Group, which includes several other brands with thinner margins.

The strategic reversal signals challenges in the electric vehicle market. Porsche AG's flagship electric model, the Taycan, has experienced sales below expectations. The anticipated growth market for luxury electric vehicles in China has become highly competitive with domestic brands. Additionally, serving the American market has become more costly due to tariffs.

Beyond the accounting entries, Porsche AG's underlying business showed signs of slowing. Vehicle sales declined 15% compared to the previous year, and revenue fell 12% to 32.2 billion euros. The financial impact extended to Volkswagen Group, which reported a 44% decrease in net profit for 2025. The group has announced a plan to reduce its workforce in Germany by 2030, while Porsche AG itself is facing job reductions.
