Poland's Polystyrene Prices Fall 5%, Now Costing $2,049 per Ton

Poland Polystyrene Import Price in December 2022

In December 2022, the polystyrene price stood at $2,049 per ton (CIF, Poland), shrinking by -4.9% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a mild decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in April 2022 an increase of 16% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $3,046 per ton in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to December 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In December 2022, the countries with the highest prices were Austria ($2,241 per ton) and Italy ($2,108 per ton), while the price for Russia ($1,556 per ton) and Greece ($1,560 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From December 2021 to December 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Greece (+0.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Poland Polystyrene Import Prices by Type

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplied products. In December 2022, the product with the highest price was expansible polystyrene in primary forms ($2,124 per ton), while the price for polystyrene in primary forms (excluding expansible polystyrene) stood at $1,879 per ton.

From December 2021 to December 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by expansible polystyrene (-1.2%).

Poland Polystyrene Imports

In December 2022, the amount of polystyrene imported into Poland plummeted to 18K tons, with a decrease of -30.9% compared with November 2022 figures. In general, imports recorded a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2022 when imports increased by 25% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 34K tons in March 2022; however, from April 2022 to December 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, polystyrene imports dropped significantly to $37M (IndexBox estimates) in December 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 12% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at 97K tons in April 2022; however, from May 2022 to December 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Poland Polystyrene Imports by Type

In December 2022, expansible polystyrene in primary forms (12K tons) constituted the largest type of polystyrene supplied to Poland, accounting for a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, expansible polystyrene in primary forms exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, polystyrene in primary forms (excluding expansible polystyrene) (5.5K tons), twofold.

From December 2021 to December 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of import of expansible polystyrene in primary forms amounted to -5.1%.

In value terms, expansible polystyrene in primary forms ($26M) constituted the largest type of polystyrene supplied to Poland, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by polystyrene in primary forms (excluding expansible polystyrene) ($10M), with a 28% share of total imports.

Poland Polystyrene Imports by Country

Germany (5.3K tons), the Netherlands (2.9K tons) and Austria (2.2K tons) were the main suppliers of polystyrene imports to Poland, with a combined 58% share of total imports. The Czech Republic, Belgium, Hungary, Italy, South Korea, France, Greece, Iran and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 40%.

From December 2021 to December 2022, the biggest increases were in South Korea (with a CAGR of +6.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, Germany ($11M), the Netherlands ($5.8M) and Austria ($4.9M) appeared to be the largest polystyrene suppliers to Poland, together accounting for 60% of total imports. The Czech Republic, Belgium, Hungary, Italy, France, South Korea, Greece, Iran and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.

Among the main suppliers, South Korea, with a CAGR of +7.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
