Poland's September 2023 Import of Iron and Steel Dwindles to $7.1M

Poland Iron and Steel Imports

In September 2023, iron and steel imports into Poland reduced to 15K tons, dropping by -8.3% against the previous month's figure. In general, total imports indicated slight growth from September 2022 to September 2023: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +1.9% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2023 figures, imports increased by +44.5% against July 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 with an increase of 68% month-to-month. As a result, imports attained the peak of 25K tons. From April 2023 to September 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, iron and steel imports reduced to $7.1M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2023. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Imports by Country

In September 2023, Ukraine (8.4K tons) constituted the largest supplier of iron and steel to Poland, with a 55% share of total imports. Moreover, iron and steel imports from Ukraine exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Russia (3.5K tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Germany (3K tons), with a 19% share.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Ukraine amounted to +4.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Russia (-2.5% per month) and Germany (+6.3% per month).

In value terms, the largest iron and steel suppliers to Poland were Ukraine ($3.5M), Russia ($1.8M) and Germany ($1.5M), together comprising 95% of total imports.

Ukraine, with a CAGR of +2.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports by Type

In September 2023, pig iron and spiegeleisen (15K tons) was the main type of iron and steel supplied to Poland, with a 100% share of total imports. It was followed by iron and non-alloy steel in ingots (17 tons), with a 0.1% share of total imports.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of pig iron and spiegeleisen totaled +2.0%.

In value terms, pig iron and spiegeleisen ($7.1M) constituted the largest type of iron and steel supplied to Poland, comprising 100% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by iron and non-alloy steel in ingots ($29K), with a 0.4% share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

In September 2023, the iron and steel price amounted to $469 per ton (CIF, Poland), with an increase of 3.4% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, saw a perceptible slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in April 2023 an increase of 19% m-o-m. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $672 per ton. From May 2023 to September 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($918 per ton), while the price for Ukraine ($412 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+3.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
