Platform X to Change EU Verification After DSA Fine

The company X, owned by Elon Musk, has agreed to modify its verification system for users in the European Union. This development follows a report from Bloomberg News, which cited a European Commission spokesperson.

The platform was penalized by European Union technology regulators in December for violating online content regulations. This action represented the first sanction issued under a major piece of digital legislation, which had previously received criticism from the U.S. government.

According to the report, a spokesperson stated that X has submitted proposed remedies concerning its blue check mark verification feature. The European Commission will now evaluate these proposed changes.

The sanction against the social media company concluded a two-year investigation conducted under the EU's Digital Services Act. This law mandates that online platforms increase their efforts to address illegal and harmful material.

In July 2024, the European Commission formally charged X with misleading its users. Regulators argued that the platform's use of the blue checkmark did not align with standard industry practices, as the status could be obtained by any paying subscriber.

Historically, the blue checkmark symbol denoted that an account belonged to a verified public figure. This policy was altered after Musk purchased the company, then known as Twitter, to indicate an account held by a paying subscriber.
