Pilot Project Successfully Creates Cracker-Grade Feedstock from Plastic Waste

A collaborative pilot project has successfully upgraded pyrolysis oil derived from plastic waste into a cracker-grade feedstock suitable for producing virgin polyolefins. According to Packaging Europe, the effort involved Clariant, Borealis, and SINTEF.

The pilot was conducted at a research facility in Norway. It utilized specialized catalysts from Clariant to treat the pyrolysis oil and perform hydrocracking, resulting in a product deemed appropriate for steam crackers. The hydrotreating process is said to meet all required specifications within a single reactor, a design that may lower capital costs, operational expenses, and energy use compared to multi-reactor systems.

Subsequent hydrocracking generates hydrocarbon fractions similar to naphtha, which is believed to enhance both the efficiency of the process and the flexibility of the final product. Borealis contributed its expertise by defining the target quality for the pyrolysis oil used in the test.

The catalyst reportedly achieved full conversion across all critical parameters, including the complete saturation of certain compounds without forming gum, a step considered vital for further processing. Contaminants such as oxygenates were also fully converted. With all product specifications met, the partners indicate the technology is now prepared for industrial-scale implementation.

The project's goal was to enable plastic recycling without degrading material quality, thereby supporting a circular economy. In related developments, Zeopore Technologies and BioBTX have announced progress in turning waste plastics and biomass into circular aromatics, citing a significant yield increase for certain chemicals. Separately, PolyCycl has secured Series A funding to deploy its technology for converting low-grade plastic waste into feedstock for low-carbon materials.
