PhonePe Delays IPO Due to Unfavorable Market Conditions in 2026

India's largest digital payments platform, PhonePe, has decided to delay its initial public offering, according to a report from Yahoo Finance. The Bengaluru-based company announced the pause, stating it remains committed to a public listing when financial markets become more favorable.

The decision follows the company's submission of an updated prospectus less than two months ago, which outlined intentions for a domestic listing. Recent geopolitical instability and declining equity markets have created a challenging environment. Key Indian stock indices have each dropped approximately nine percent in the last month, with numerous stocks seeing significant losses since late February.

The fintech firm, which achieved a valuation of twelve billion dollars in early 2023, had been aiming for a market capitalization near fifteen billion dollars through its offering. This could have generated up to 1.5 billion dollars. However, advisors recently proposed a lower valuation target of around nine billion dollars. A company representative dismissed suggestions that valuation issues caused the delay, attributing the pause solely to external market conditions.

The planned offering was anticipated to allow several early investors to reduce their holdings. These included Tiger Global and Microsoft, which intended to divest their complete stakes. Majority owner Walmart planned to sell a portion of its shares while maintaining control over the company.

Founded in 2015, PhonePe was acquired by Flipkart the following year and has grown to dominate transaction volumes on India's Unified Payments Interface, surpassing competitor Google Pay. In February 2026, it processed a higher volume and value of transactions than its rival, according to national payments data. After being separated from Flipkart in 2022, with Walmart remaining the largest shareholder, the company has broadened its services beyond payments to include stockbroking, mutual funds, and an Android app store.

Financial results from the first half of the fiscal year ending September 2025 show operational revenue increased by twenty-two percent year-over-year. The company's net loss also expanded during the same period as it continued investing in service expansion.
