Parent Stress Management Linked to Lower Child Obesity Risk, Study Finds

Research reported by Euronews indicates that assisting parents with stress may lower obesity risk in young children. The study found that high parental stress can negatively affect family routines, lead to poorer food choices, and reduce positive parenting actions.

A team from Yale University conducted a randomized trial over twelve weeks involving 114 parents who were themselves overweight or obese. These parents had children between the ages of two and five. Participants were split into two groups, with one receiving a stress intervention program that included mindfulness training and behavioral self-regulation alongside guidance on nutrition and physical activity. The other group received only the guidance on nutrition and activity.

Monitoring during the study period showed that parents in the stress intervention group reported reduced stress and demonstrated better parenting. Their children consumed less unhealthy food and did not gain weight. In contrast, parents in the other group did not show the same improvements, and their children experienced significant weight increases, making them far more likely to be classified as overweight or obese.

Childhood obesity is a growing global concern, with international health targets established to reduce its prevalence. Excess weight in early childhood is associated with increased health risks both in the short term and later in life.
