ONE Boosts Stake in Seaspan Holding to 48.9% as Yangzijiang Invests $825.7M

According to Splash247, Ocean Network Express is raising its ownership in Poseidon Acquisition Corp, the holding entity for containership lessor Seaspan. The Singapore-based liner, established by Japanese firms MOL, NYK, and K Line, will see its stake grow to 48.9% from approximately 28.7% upon completion of the agreements.

The action strengthens the relationship between the carrier and the tonnage provider. Ocean Network Express stated the move supports its strategic goal of securing vessel access and enhancing operational efficiency via closer collaboration with Seaspan.

This investment follows the 2023 privatization of Seaspan's parent company, Atlas Corp, by a consortium that included the liner. Separately, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding is entering Poseidon's shareholder base by acquiring a 10% equity interest valued around $825.7 million.

The Chinese shipbuilder will fund the purchase of roughly 29.18 million shares entirely with internal cash. The stake is being bought from affiliates of Fairfax Financial and the Washington family. In a related but independent transaction, a private vehicle controlled by Yangzijiang's executive chairman is separately buying an additional 5% of Poseidon.

The shipyard group clarified that the two investments are made independently without a joint venture structure. The changes deepen connections within the container shipping industry, aligning Yangzijiang's shipbuilding capacity with long-term vessel demand from liner operators. Seaspan is a major customer for Yangzijiang's yards, controlling a fleet of more than 180 ships with over 50 newbuilds on order.

Beyond containerships, Seaspan has been broadening its leasing platform into segments including car carriers and ethane carriers.
