Norwegian Red Deer Harvest Declines 7.5% in Latest Hunting Season

Preliminary figures from Statistics Norway indicate a reduction in the number of red deer harvested during the most recent hunting year. The total number of animals felled across the country was 50,148, representing a decrease of 7.5 percent compared to the preceding season. This follows a previous period of decline, with the overall harvest down 5.1 percent from two hunting years prior.

The data shows a broad-based reduction across age and sex categories. For male deer, the harvest of calves fell by 9.9 percent, while yearlings and older males declined by 4.0 and 6.2 percent, respectively. Among female deer, the harvest of calves decreased by 9.7 percent, with yearlings and older females down 5.7 and 8.8 percent. The distribution of the total harvest was nearly even between males and females, with 24,681 males and 25,467 females taken.

Regional harvest figures varied significantly. The county of Vestland recorded the highest number of deer felled at 24,468, followed by More og Romsdal with 11,281 and Trondelag with 4,684. Several northern counties, including Nordland, Troms, and Finnmark, reported minimal or no red deer hunting activity. The national harvest percentage, calculated as animals shot relative to licenses issued, stood at 64 percent. County-level harvest rates ranged from a high of 68 percent in Vestland and More og Romsdal to a low of 11 percent in Nordland.

The statistics are compiled from mandatory reports submitted by municipal authorities following the regular hunting period, which runs from early September to late December. Preliminary figures are published annually in March. The purpose of the statistics is to document the extent of legal red deer hunting in Norway, with data series extending back to the middle of the 20th century.
