Norway's Early 2026 Export Decline: Trade Figures Show 16.7% Drop

Data from Statistics Norway reveals a contraction in the country's goods exports for the initial months of the current year. The total export value for the period from the start of the year through February 2026 was recorded at 287.5 billion Norwegian kroner, representing a decrease of 16.7 percent compared to the same period in the previous year. The monthly export figure for February 2026 alone was 133.1 billion kroner, which is 20.9 percent lower than the value from February 2025.

Energy and Mainland Exports Experience Downturn

The decline was led by key export commodities. Shipments of natural gas fell by 30.6 percent for the year-to-date period, while crude oil exports dropped by 10.8 percent. Exports from mainland Norway, which exclude oil, gas, condensates, ships, and oil platforms, also decreased. Mainland exports for the first two months of the year totaled 118.5 billion kroner, a reduction of 6.8 percent from the prior year.

Fish Exports Remain a Major Component

Within mainland exports, the category of fish, crustaceans, molluscs and preparations thereof was a significant contributor, valued at 27.3 billion kroner for the year so far. This marked a slight decline of 3.3 percent. Historical data shows that salmon constituted the vast majority of this category's export value in the preceding year.

Import Trends and Trade Balance

On the import side, the total value for the January-February 2026 period was 166.9 billion kroner, a 3.4 percent decrease. However, imports for the single month of February 2026 saw a modest increase of 1.2 percent year-over-year. The overall trade balance for the first two months showed a surplus of 120.6 billion kroner, which is 30.0 percent lower than the surplus from the same period in 2025.

Detailed Import Categories Show Mixed Results

A detailed breakdown of imports by main groups shows varied performance. Notable increases were observed in imports of road vehicles and office machines for the February 2026 month. Conversely, imports of other transport equipment, including ships, saw a significant decline. Imports of fish and related products also increased sharply for the month but decreased for the year-to-date period.
