New Demeter Award Category Honors Female Farmers in 2026

Women in Agribusiness, in collaboration with the American Farm Bureau Federation, has established a new category for its Demeter Award of Excellence. According to World-Grain, this addition is specifically for female producers and coincides with the current year's designation as the International Year of the Woman Farmer.

This marks the fourth award category, though it is a special addition exclusive to this year. It supplements three other categories that have been presented annually since 2013, which recognize women for professional excellence or significant contributions to the agribusiness sector. The award's namesake is Demeter, the ancient Greek harvest goddess.

An organization representative stated that extending the award to highlight a female farmer was appropriate given the international designation. The statement encouraged women to apply for the recognition, which aims to elevate achievements and strengthen leadership influence within agriculture and food.

All award recipients will be honored at the Women in Agribusiness Summit scheduled for late September in New Orleans. Those selected will be informed before the event and will receive a complimentary registration to attend and accept the award on stage.

Nominations for all award categories are currently open until late June. There is no cap on the number of entries submitted, and individuals may nominate themselves. The criteria for nomination require a minimum of ten years of experience in the agriculture or food industry, being a positive example to other women, breaking down barriers and serving as a resource, and consistently demonstrating professionalism.

For this year only, the American Farm Bureau Federation will work with Women in Agribusiness to promote the award to farmers and participate in the selection committee. A representative from the federation will also present the award on stage to the final recipient.
