Record-breaking Price of Rabbit Meat in the Netherlands Reaches $9,538 per Ton

Netherlands Rabbit Meat Export Price in May 2023

In May 2023, the rabbit meat price stood at $9,538 per ton (FOB, Netherlands), increasing by 25% against the previous month. In general, the export price recorded a temperate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2022 an increase of 265% month-to-month. The export price peaked in May 2023.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In May 2023, the country with the highest price was Italy ($14,466 per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($7,913 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+12.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Netherlands Rabbit Meat Exports

In May 2023, after four months of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of rabbit or hare meat, when their volume increased by 5.2% to 31 tons. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in September 2022 when exports increased by 1,190% against the previous month. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 582 tons. From October 2022 to May 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, rabbit meat exports skyrocketed to $294K (IndexBox estimates) in May 2023. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate notable growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in September 2022 with an increase of 227% month-to-month. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $1.1M. From October 2022 to May 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Netherlands Rabbit Meat Exports by Country

Belgium (8.8 tons), Germany (6.5 tons) and the UK (3.9 tons) were the main destinations of rabbit meat exports from the Netherlands, with a combined 63% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the Czech Republic, Niger, Italy and Lithuania, which together accounted for a further 25%.

From May 2022 to May 2023, the biggest increases were in Lithuania (with a CAGR of +73.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Belgium ($119K) emerged as the key foreign market for rabbit meat exports from the Netherlands, comprising 40% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($52K), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with a 9.2% share.

From May 2022 to May 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value to Belgium amounted to +15.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Germany (-1.2% per month) and Italy (+5.8% per month).
