The Price of Carbon Electrodes in the Netherlands Increases Slightly to $1,341 per Ton
Netherlands Carbon Electrode Export Price in April 2023
In April 2023, the carbon electrode price stood at $1,341 per ton (FOB, Netherlands), increasing by 10% against the previous month. Over the last twelve-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.6%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $1,411 per ton in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to April 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In April 2023, the country with the highest price was Germany ($2,773 per ton), while the average price for exports to Iceland amounted to $1,259 per ton.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+4.3%).

Netherlands Carbon Electrode Export Prices by Type
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major types of exported product. In April 2023, the product with the highest price was carbon electrodes not for furnaces ($8,122 per ton), while the average price for exports of carbon electrodes for furnaces stood at $1,325 per ton.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: furnace carbon electrode (+1.6%).
Netherlands Carbon Electrode Exports
In April 2023, exports of carbon electrodes from the Netherlands reduced sharply to 9.7K tons, with a decrease of -40.6% against the month before. Over the period under review, exports recorded a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2023 when exports increased by 27% m-o-m. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 17K tons. From March 2023 to April 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, carbon electrode exports fell rapidly to $13M (IndexBox estimates) in April 2023. In general, exports saw a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 when exports increased by 25% m-o-m.
Netherlands Carbon Electrode Exports by Type
Carbon electrodes for furnaces (9.7K tons) was the largest type of carbon electrode exported from the Netherlands, with a 100% share of total exports. It was followed by carbon electrodes not for furnaces (23 tons), with a 0.2% share of total exports.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of export of carbon electrodes for furnaces amounted to -2.7%.
In value terms, carbon electrodes for furnaces ($13M) remains the largest type of carbon electrode exported from the Netherlands, comprising 99% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by carbon electrodes not for furnaces ($183K), with a 1.4% share of total exports.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the export volume of carbon electrodes for furnaces totaled -1.1%.
Netherlands Carbon Electrode Exports by Country
Iceland (9.2K tons) was the main destination for carbon electrode exports from the Netherlands, with a 95% share of total exports. Moreover, carbon electrode exports to Iceland exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (349 tons), more than tenfold.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume to Iceland stood at -2.7%.
In value terms, Iceland ($12M) remains the key foreign market for carbon electrode exports from the Netherlands, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($968K), with a 7.4% share of total exports.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value to Iceland was relatively modest.
