According to a report from the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service, national shell egg prices were steady to higher as of March 16. The overall market undertone is described as firm to higher. Retail demand is moderate to fairly good, while food service and distributive demand is light to occasionally moderate. Market offerings are light to moderate, with generally moderate supplies and moderate market activity.

Price and Volume Data

For caged white large eggs, the weighted average price was 136.49 cents per dozen, representing an increase of 18.57 cents from the last reported figure. The volume for that category was 24,270 cases. Caged white extra large eggs had a weighted average of 125.89 cents per dozen on a volume of 14,820 cases. Caged white medium eggs averaged 68.33 cents per dozen. In the cage-free category, white large eggs had a weighted average price of 138.02 cents per dozen, up 8.29 cents from the prior report, with a volume of 7,740 cases.

Regional Movement and California Market

Negotiated regional volume movement data shows a total of 75,762 cases of shell eggs were moved. The Midwest region sent 43,788 cases to various destinations. The California market, specifically for cage-free eggs, showed a weighted average price of 158.24 cents per dozen for white large eggs, an increase of 13.32 cents. The undertone in California is firm to higher, with demand into retail channels mostly light to moderate and loose egg demand light.
