NASA Partners with Fisheries Science Center to Provide Satellite Data for Marine Research

NASA has entered a new partnership with the Science Center for Marine Fisheries, according to SeafoodSource. Under this arrangement, NASA will supply advanced satellite data to aid fisheries and marine science research.

Researchers from NASA's Earth Science Division have become members of the center's Industry Advisory Board. This membership facilitates the integration of satellite imagery into the center's studies and establishes a more structured collaborative framework.

Satellite data from NASA is already applied in marine research. Information on ocean surface temperature and color gathered by satellites has assisted scientists in gaining a better understanding of microscopic phytoplankton prevalence and the distribution and health of commercial fish species such as menhaden.

NASA enhanced its ocean observation capabilities in 2024 with the launch of the PACE satellite. This satellite can gather data from ultraviolet, infrared, and visible wavelengths. It provides access to a significantly broader spectrum of colors than earlier satellites, allowing for more advanced phytoplankton measurements and the identification of organisms potentially harmful to fish or consumers.

The partnership is expected to lead to wider commercial uses for NASA data. Integrating this data is anticipated to yield new insights into oceans and important marine species, which would benefit finfish and shellfish fisheries and their industry partners. The extensive range of NASA's ocean observations, especially the advanced data from PACE, is set to become a fundamental component of the center's future research.
