Mortgage Rates Rise to 5.98% Amid Middle East Tensions and Inflation Fears

Mortgage rates have increased as the bond market reacted to events in the Middle East, with rising oil prices fueling inflation concerns and pushing bond yields higher. Data from Zillow indicates the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate is now 5.98%, a rise of 17 basis points from the previous weekend. The average 15-year fixed rate increased 18 basis points to 5.50%.

Current Rate Averages

According to the latest figures, other average rates include a 20-year fixed at 5.90%, a 5/1 adjustable-rate mortgage at 5.96%, and a 7/1 ARM at 5.70%. For Veterans Affairs loans, the average 30-year VA rate is 5.52%, the 15-year VA is 5.24%, and the 5/1 VA is 5.30%. Mortgage refinance rates are generally higher, with averages including 6.07% for a 30-year fixed, 6.12% for a 20-year fixed, and 5.62% for a 15-year fixed.

A 30-year fixed mortgage typically offers lower and predictable monthly payments, but results in more interest paid over the loan's lifetime compared to shorter terms. A 15-year fixed mortgage carries a lower interest rate and saves on total interest, though it requires higher monthly payments.
