Mexico's Sulphite Price Soars 24% to $1,105 per Ton
Mexico Sulphites Import Price in October 2022
In October 2022, the sulphites price stood at $1,105 per ton (CIF, Mexico), rising by 24% against the previous month. In general, the import price posted prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when the average import price increased by 96% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in October 2022.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Italy ($3,110 per ton), while the price for China ($511 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to October 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+17.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Mexico Sulphites Imports
In October 2022, imports of sulphites into Mexico fell sharply to 1.1K tons, reducing by -48.6% on September 2022. In general, imports saw a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2022 with an increase of 266% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at 7.9K tons in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to October 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sulphites imports declined significantly to $1.2M (IndexBox estimates) in October 2022. Overall, imports saw a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in September 2022 with an increase of 132% month-to-month. Imports peaked at 4.6K tons in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to October 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Mexico Sulphites Imports by Country
The United States (547 tons), Germany (544 tons) and China (2 tons) were the main suppliers of sulphites imports to Mexico, with a combined 99.9% share of total imports.
From January 2022 to October 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Germany (with a CAGR of -5.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, the largest sulphites suppliers to Mexico were Germany ($624K), the United States ($583K) and China ($1K), together accounting for 99.9% of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, Germany, with a CAGR of -0.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
Factors Affecting Sulphite Prices
Sulphite prices in Mexico have been on the rise in recent years, due to a number of factors. One of the main drivers of this price increase has been the increased demand for sulphite-containing products from China. This has put pressure on global sulphite prices, as China is the world's largest producer and consumer of sulphite.
Other factors that have contributed to the price increase include tight global supply and increased transportation costs. The Mexican government has also imposed a number of environmental regulations on sulphite production, which has also contributed to the rising cost.
