Melbourne Tops Time Out's 2026 Global City Ranking

An annual ranking from Time Out has identified the world's 50 best cities, with European destinations securing 19 of those positions. The list is compiled from a survey of residents across 150 cities, which received over 24,000 responses, combined with input from more than 100 of the publication's city experts.

Melbourne, Australia, achieved the highest overall ranking. The city of Edinburgh was named the best in Europe and placed third globally, followed closely by London in fourth position. Shanghai secured second place in the worldwide list.

The remainder of the top ten includes New York, Cape Town, Mexico City, Bangkok, Seoul, and Tokyo. Survey participants from Edinburgh highlighted the city's walkability, food offerings, green spaces, and cultural environment. The city was also noted for high levels of resident happiness, with a significant majority reporting they find daily joy there.

London received an exceptionally high approval rating for its arts and culture scene from its residents. The city's restaurant offerings and green spaces were also commended. On the European continent, Zurich placed just outside the top ten, ranking eleventh, with its seasonal attractions receiving positive mention.

Several other European cities ranked between the 11th and 20th positions, including Copenhagen, Krakow, Porto, Madrid, and Valencia. Paris, while ranking 22nd overall, received a perfect score for its arts and culture scene from respondents, and an overwhelming majority approved of its food and drink offerings.

Additional cities appearing within the top 50 include Bath, Bilbao, Berlin, Antwerp, Naples, Amsterdam, Athens, Vienna, Dublin, and Lisbon.
