The total area harvested in terms of tangerines, mandarins, clementines, satsumas production in Asia amounted to 2M ha in 2017, going up by 2.5% against the previous year. The harvested area increased gradually over the last decade, with an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2007 to 2017. 

Production By Country

China (18M tonnes) remains the largest mandarin and clementine producing country in Asia, comprising approx. 78% of total production. Moreover, mandarin and clementine production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest producer, Turkey (1.6M tonnes), more than tenfold. Japan (741K tonnes) ranked third in terms of total production with a 3.2% share.

In China, mandarin and clementine production increased at an average annual rate of +8.9% over the period from 2007-2017. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (+7.6% per year) and Japan (-3.6% per year).

Exports in Asia

In 2017, mandarin and clementine exports in Asia stood at 1.9M tonnes, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. The total exports indicated a strong increase from 2007 to 2017: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last decade. Based on 2017 figures, the mandarin and clementine exports increased by +6.2% against 2015 indices.

In value terms, mandarin and clementine exports totaled $1.5B (IndexBox estimates) in 2017, growing robustly over the last decade. 

Exports by Country

Turkey (788K tonnes) and China (560K tonnes) represented roughly 70% of total exports of tangerines, mandarins, clementines, satsumas in 2017. Pakistan (328K tonnes) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Israel (130K tonnes). All these countries together took near 24% share of total exports. Georgia (43K tonnes) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of exports, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Israel (+16.3% per year), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest mandarin and clementine markets worldwide were China ($767M), Turkey ($392M) and Pakistan ($138M), with a combined 85% share of total exports. Israel and Georgia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 9.3%.

Export Prices by Country

 

In 2017, the mandarin and clementine export price in Asia amounted to $784 per tonne, reducing by -5.9% against the previous year. The export price indicated a remarkable growth from 2007 to 2017: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2017 figures, the mandarin and clementine export price decreased by -10.5% against 2015 indices.

Export prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest export price was China ($1.4 per kg), while Pakistan ($420 per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of export prices was attained by China (+12.2% per year), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Asia

In 2017, imports of tangerines, mandarins, clementines, satsumas in Asia amounted to 1.3M tonnes, rising by 7.5% against the previous year. The total imports indicated a remarkable expansion from 2007 to 2017: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.6% over the last decade. In value terms, mandarin and clementine imports totaled $900M (IndexBox estimates) in 2017. 

Imports by Country

In 2017, Thailand (212K tonnes), Iraq (174K tonnes), Indonesia (119K tonnes), Malaysia (103K tonnes), the Philippines (88K tonnes), Afghanistan (85K tonnes), the United Arab Emirates (58K tonnes), Saudi Arabia (48K tonnes), Kazakhstan (44K tonnes), Singapore (40K tonnes), China, Hong Kong SAR (35K tonnes) and Kuwait (32K tonnes) were the key importers of tangerines, mandarins, clementines, satsumas in Asia, creating 83% of total imports.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of imports, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Thailand (+33.5% per year), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest mandarin and clementine markets worldwide were Thailand ($171M), Indonesia ($104M) and Malaysia ($73M), together comprising 39% of total imports.

 

Import Prices by Country

In 2017, the mandarin and clementine import price in Asia amounted to $716 per tonne, jumping by 3.3% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2017, the country with the highest import price was China, Hong Kong SAR ($1.3 per kg), while Iraq ($370 per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of import prices was attained by Malaysia (+8.1% per year), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
