Malaysia Unveils Sodium-Ion Battery Prototype with 300+ Wh/kg Density

According to a report from pv magazine, NanoMalaysia Berhad has introduced a prototype sodium-ion battery system with an energy density above 300 Wh/kg. The agency, which operates under Malaysia's Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, stated the prototype ranks among the most advanced sodium-ion systems reported worldwide.

The development was conducted through the NanoMalaysia Energy Storage Technology Initiative in partnership with International Battery Centre Sdn Bhd. The agency described reaching this milestone as a key step toward further development, scaling, and commercial readiness. It noted that broad industry collaborations are critical for advancing the technology through higher readiness levels.

The chief executive of NanoMalaysia Berhad indicated that surpassing 300 Wh/kg at the prototype stage demonstrates sodium-ion technology can deliver performance comparable to lithium-ion while addressing challenges related to cost, safety, and material sustainability. The executive underscored the breakthrough's significance for the national energy storage ecosystem and stated that establishing multiple partnerships with industrial off-takers will be crucial for advancing technology readiness and safeguarding investor interests.
