Low-Mounted Agrivoltaic Design Offers Cost and Farming Benefits

German engineering company BEC Energie Consult has introduced a new substructure for agrivoltaic systems installed at low heights. According to a report from pv magazine, the design aims to lower installation expenses while permitting agricultural activities to continue underneath the solar panels.

A recent study by Germany's Thunen Institute has expressed doubts about the financial sustainability of agrivoltaics, especially systems using elevated mounts, citing high initial costs and limited land-use efficiency. The engineering firm suggests that low-mounted systems represent a distinct segment that may address these economic challenges. Their structure ranges in height from 1.1 to 1.5 meters and uses coated steel bars for support, arranging modules in block units rather than rows to cut material use.

The company reports that structure expenses for this design fall within a specific range per watt. For a project of five megawatts, the substructure cost is approximately one-third of the cost for a system mounted at 2.1 meters and even less compared to a four-meter design. Land-use efficiency is also reportedly higher, influencing long-term land lease costs per megawatt.

Key design elements include specific gaps between modules to allow for even water distribution and diffuse light penetration, which along with minimal soil sealing, is intended to foster plant growth. The company highlights applications in free-range poultry farming, where the structure can offer protection from predators and create shaded areas, potentially leading to more uniform land use by animals and vegetation recovery.

Potential economic benefits for farmers include supplementary revenue from land agreements, decreased animal losses, and possible enhancements to product quality from varied animal diets. A recent project developed under national regulations, with a capacity of 3.5 megawatts covering several hectares, incurred substructure costs of a specified amount. The developer indicates this project could be competitive under existing tender conditions without extra financial support.

The firm concludes that while elevated systems face valid criticism, low-mounted concepts may present a viable path forward, combining power generation with agricultural use and offering advantages for livestock and land management.
